Permit fees are established by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Rwanda Development Board (RDB). 100% of permit revenue funds conservation and community development.

WHERE TO TREK
Bwindi Impenetrable Trekking Sectors
Bwindi is divided into four distinct administrative sectors plus Mgahinga Gorilla NP. Your permit is issued for a specific sector.
Buhoma Sector (Northern Bwindi)
Uganda’s original gorilla sector. Lower elevation trails, accessible lodges, great for travelers preferring gentler hikes.
Rushaga Sector (Southern Bwindi)
Highest density of habituated gorilla families and the exclusive home of the 4-Hour Habituation Experience.
Nkuringo Sector (Southwestern Bwindi)
High-altitude ridges with jaw-dropping views of the Virunga Volcano chain and Lake Mutanda.
Ruhija Sector (Eastern Bwindi)
High montane forest canopy (2,300m+). Renowned for exceptional birdwatching and deep jungle treks.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Trek the Nyakagezi family on the conical volcanic slopes bordering Rwanda and DR Congo.
ESSENTIAL RULES
Gorilla Trekking Regulations
These international protocols protect both you and the endangered mountain gorillas from disease and disturbance.
Minimum Age: 15 Years
Strictly enforced by UWA. Travelers under 15 are not permitted to trek gorillas for primate and child safety.
1 Hour Time Limit
Viewing is strictly limited to 60 minutes once your group reaches the gorilla family to minimize human impact.
7-Meter Distance
Guests must maintain a minimum 7m (21ft) distance from gorillas to prevent disease transmission.
No Flash Photography
Flash is strictly forbidden as it can startle gorillas. Disable camera flash before heading into the forest.
Illness Policy
Because gorillas share 98.4% human DNA, guests with active flu, cough, or infectious illness must not trek.
Trekking Gear & Porters
Gardening gloves, gaiters, waterproof boots, and hiring a local community porter ($15–$20) are strongly advised.
