Required Vaccinations for East Africa Safaris: A 2026 Health Guide

Mandatory Yellow Fever requirements, malaria prevention protocols, entry checks at Entebbe Airport, and recommended routine immunizations.

Staying healthy on your African safari ensures you enjoy every moment of your adventure. Here is the official medical and immunization guidance for traveling to Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

1. Mandatory Yellow Fever Vaccination (ICVP)

A valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) for Yellow Fever is a strict legal entry requirement for Uganda. Port health officials at Entebbe International Airport inspect your yellow vaccination booklet prior to passport control. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days prior to arrival.

2. Malaria Prevention & Prophylaxis

Uganda and East Africa are malaria-endemic regions. We strongly recommend visiting a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to obtain prescription antimalarial tablets (such as Atovaquone-Proguanil / Malarone or Doxycycline). In the evenings, wear long sleeves and apply 30%+ DEET insect repellent.

3. Routine Immunizations

Ensure your standard routine vaccines are up to date: Tetanus, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and MMR.

4. Emergency Medical Evacuation Insurance

All Valverde Safaris clients are advised to have comprehensive international medical coverage that includes emergency air evacuation (e.g., AMREF Flying Doctors), ensuring prompt access to premier medical facilities in Kampala or Nairobi if needed.
